First Alert Weather Day: Excessive Heat, Strong Strom

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Today is yet another First Alert Weather Day because of excessive afternoon heat and also the risk of some strong thunderstorms this afternoon.

4TH OF JULY – FIRST ALERT DAY

For Independence Day we’re not only focused on the heat and humidity, but also the risk of showers and storms firing up in the afternoon.  High temperatures are still expected to be well into the 90s with a heat index as high as 110° in the afternoon.  Heat advisories are in effect across most of the Mid State until 7pm tonight.

With many of us planning for a day outside, you’ll want to keep an eye to the sky for some drenching thunderstorms in the afternoon and early evening.  Not everyone is going to end up seeing a thunderstorm, but for those that do any storm could produce very heavy rainfall and even some gusty winds.  Be ready to bring your plans inside this afternoon.  The good news is that once we lose daytime heating, storms will fizzle out and most of the area will be dry in time for fireworks!

It will stay warm and humid tonight with lows in the upper 70s.  Expect more showers and storms to develop late tonight as a cold front approaches the Mid State.

LATE WEEK AND WEEKEND

As that cold front pushes through on Friday it will bring us some more scattered showers and storms in the morning and a couple that will linger into the afternoon as well. The later we go into the day the more dry time we’ll end up seeing. It will still be hot and humid with highs in the low 90s and heat index near 100°.

The weekend is looking dry and slightly less humid with highs near and into the 90s both Saturday and Sunday. Both days will feature a few clouds but plenty of sunshine otherwise.

NEXT WEEK

The heat will stick with us early next week with temperatures in the low 90s Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with a passing thunderstorm around on each day.
